A catastrophic explosion occurred on Thursday, Sept. 9 in San Bruno, killing four people and injuring more than 50 others. The explosion and subsequent fire destroyed over 40 homes in the area after a gas line ruptured. The gas line was owned and operated by PG&E.

Third degree burns and smoke inhalation have been reported as main causes of injury to residents of the San Bruno community. Residents had reported smelling natural gas in the area in the days leading up to the explosion, which may be an indication that the blast could have been prevented. Twelve hours after the explosion, only 75 present of the fire was contained. Over 100 additional homes in the area have sustained extensive damage.

The Red Cross has opened two shelters. One is at Veterans Memorial Recreation Center at 251 City Park Way in San Bruno. The other is at the senior center adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Recreation Center.
