17-Year Old Pedestrian Dies After Struck by Car at Sloat and Vale, San Francisco

On the evening of March 2, 2013 on Sloat Boulevard at Vale Avenue in San Francisco, a 17-year old Lowell High School junior was struck by a car while she was walking across the intersection. The impact caused severe injuries which led to her death.

Reports state that the auto’s driver is being charged with driving under the influence.

NASCAR Crash at Daytona

Over two dozen fans watching the recent NASCAR races at Daytona International Speedway were injured after driver Kyle Larson’s No. 32 car crashed into a fence. As a result, this sent car parts flying into the stands. The accident occurred a day before the Daytona 500. Middle School Student’s Death Brings Home Bicycle Safety Issues

The death of 12-year-old Hailey Ratliff, who was killed while riding her bike home from school in September, cast a pall over the annual Marin County bike and walk to school event. Organizers insist, however, that it tragically illustrates the importance of the Safe Routes to School program, and the need of parents and officials to embrace efforts to provide safe travel to and from school. Wendi Kallins, program director for Safe Routes to School, told reporters that “it means we have to be even more dedicated to safety and remind children and parents to take safety precautions.”

The Safe Routes to School program, formerly a grassroots campaign, is now administered by the Transportation Authority of Marin. The program seeks to get schoolchildren walking and riding to school, rather than riding in parents’ vehicles. Organizers point to child obesity rates that are at all-time highs, as well as statistics that show that nearly 30% of drive time traffic is parents taking their children to and from school. The Marin program began in 2000 with nine schools and now boasts more than 50 participating schools. The program has expanded across the United States and is now administered by transportation departments throughout the nation.

The program seeks to use tax revenues to provide additional crossing guards, as well as school education programs and capital improvements, such as the construction or repair of sidewalks. The unfortunate death of Ratliff has not dissuaded officials from advocating for the Safe Routes to Schools programs. Dianne Steinhauser, head of the local transportation authority, told reporters that the accident was not “an indication that the program is not valid overall. This was just a real unfortunate tragedy.”

Daly City woman struck by SF Muni bus over weekend dies

Eileen Barrett, 72-year-old Daly City, California, resident hit by a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus near Lake Merced. She passed away on Monday, February 18th.MUNI Bus Eileen Barrett was struck by an outbound 18-46th Avenue bus at about 4:30 p.m. at Lake Merced Boulevard. Although doctors initially thought she would survive this catastrophic accident, despite having been transported to a hospital with serious injuries, she did not make it. As is standard protocol for these kinds of accidents, the bus operator was expected to undergo drug and alcohol testing. San Francisco authorities expressed their condolences to the family and friends of Eileen Barrett and stated that a full investigation as to the cause of this accident is underway. Full article.

In 2005, the city of San Francisco tore down a 1.2 mile stretch of the Central Freeway and replaced it with Octavia Boulevard, a bucolic ground level roadway lined with trees and quiet neighborhoods. In the last three years, though, the intersection of Octavia and Market Street has become one of the city’s most heavily traveled and dangerous intersections. Since 2009, there have been more than 30 accidents on the corner. In 2011, there were 13 collisions that resulted in personal injury, with nine of them involving bicycles and bicyclists. Of the 56 accidents at the corner since it was opened, four have involved fatalities. Authorities point to the large numbers of vehicles entering and leaving Highway 101, as well as the heavily used bike lane.

Based on these statistics, city and county officials admit that the intersection may need to be redesigned or reconfigured. With traffic counts in excess of 63,000 per day (getting on and off the freeway), streets in the neighborhood are packed with vehicles most of the day.

Allan Jacobs, a renowned urban planning designer from UC-Berkeley, contends that the project achieved its objective of replacing the freeway with a street that moves vehicles while still creating street life. He attributes some of the challenges people are currently facing to the fact that many measures that would have slowed traffic through the intersection were left out of the project due to compromises with the California Department of Transportation and with the City of San Francisco. He points specifically to plans to narrow the lanes coming off the freeway, and to build a slight uphill approach, both of which were eliminated as the project moved forward.

When you have been hurt in a car, truck or motorcycle accident, the impact on every aspect of your life can be daunting. You may be uncertain what you need to do to best protect your interests. Here are some of the most important things to remember:

  • Protect your health — Often, the best thing to do regarding your health is wait until emergency medical professionals arrive on the scene. You may think you are fine to move under your own power, but can be in shock, or can have injuries that may not immediately be apparent. You should call 911 immediately, and let police and medical personnel take charge at the scene. If you leave the scene under your own power, you should immediately travel to the hospital or a clinic, or should schedule an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. When you seek medical treatment, be sure to tell doctors and nurses about anything that seems out of the ordinary. Don’t limit your discussion to the obvious injuries you have suffered.
  • Stay calm — Turn off your vehicle and turn on any emergency lights. It is preferable to leave your vehicle exactly where it stopped, as that makes investigation of the accident easier.
  • Gather all necessary information from other drivers and witnesses — Get name, address, phone number and insurance information from anyone involved in the accident, as well as all witnesses. Do not rely on police officers to gather this information for you.
  • Take pictures of the scene, of any damage to your car, and of any visible injuries you have suffered — If your cell phone has a camera, use it. These pictures can be critical if your case goes to trial
  • Notify your insurance company — Contact your insurance provider in a timely manner and tell them you have been in an accident. If you have insurance information from other drivers, you can provide that to your insurer.
  • Call an experienced lawyer — Before you enter into any agreement with any insurance company, you should consult an attorney. Insurers have a vested interest in paying you as little as possible.

For years, 8th Street in the South of Market district has been a bane to bicyclists. Until recently, a skinny bike lane alongside four speed-inducing lanes made bicycle travel on 8th Street treacherous. The bike lane was recently reconfigured, widening the bike lane and removing bicyclists from the door zone. The upgrade came about after bike advocates and D6 Supervisor Jane Kim urged reconfiguration as a way to slow down motor vehicle traffic, reduce crossing distances for pedestrians, and create a safer and more comfortable space for bicycles and bicyclists.

Kim acknowledges that the 8th Street project received priority because of its history of pedestrian injuries, but notes that the changes will offer significant benefit to bicyclists as well. She also believes that the changes will make it easier and safer for people to walk or ride bikes for short trips, further reducing congestion in the area.

Leah Shahum, executive director of the SF Bicycle Coalition, stressed that the original proposal for 8th Street was to provide more room for motor vehicles and less for bicycles. However, due to successful lobbying by pedestrian and cycling interests, the area now offers safer passage for un-motorized traffic. Shahum notes, however, that the new configuration is far from ideal. She concedes that the traffic still moves at a pretty rapid pace for a neighborhood street, and that motorists often drive in the bike lane. In addition, public transit vehicles must cross the bike lane and parking lane to get to bus stops.

This past July, we learned again about the risks faced by motorcyclists in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Even though there have been national campaigns to heighten awareness of the presence of bikers on the roadways, many motor vehicle operators simply fail to pay requisite attention and travel into the path of a motorcycle.

In early July, a motorcyclist was traveling on Park Presidio Boulevard in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park when he came around a curve and was struck by a car in the lane next to him. The impact of the crash threw him from his bike and he was run over by the car next to him. He died at the hospital from his injuries.

In a separate incident, another motorcyclist lost control of his bike on Highway 1 north of the city of Bolinas. He was thrown into the path of another vehicle, and suffered a broken leg and severe cuts and abrasions.

Bicycle Crash Victim Was Renowned Scientist

Famed Scientist Killed in Bicycle Accident in Berkeley

In July, 2012, renowned scientist Shlomo Bentin was killed when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a dump truck in downtown Berkeley, California. A neuropsychologist known for his research and insights into how the human brain works, Bentin was a professor of psychology at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. He was visiting Berkeley to conduct experiments with professors at the University of California.

Details of the accident were sketchy, but witnesses say Professor Bentin was riding his bicycle in the 2100 block of Bancroft Way when he collided with a dump truck. The truck driver initially left the scene of the accident, apparently unaware that he had struck Bentin. A passing motorcyclist followed him and he returned to the scene of the accident, where he was interviewed by police. Law enforcement officers confirmed that Bentin was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, but that the helmet was shattered in the collision.

Bentin’s death only illustrates the challenges that bicyclists face when traveling on the roadways in California. Though there have been national campaigns to increase awareness of the presence of cyclists, the fact that the driver of the dump truck was unaware that he had struck a bicyclist is all too familiar. Many bicyclists follow all appropriate safety procedures, and still incur serious and catastrophic injury, or even death, because of the carelessness or recklessness of motorists.
